From Downing Street to city streets, play takes over

Downing Street, I’m a Celeb champion and Traitors winner celebrate World Play Day with LEGO

World Play Day 2026 is here, and people across the world are playing with LEGO to celebrate, including celebrities and world leaders.

June 11 marks World Play Day, officially known as the International Day of Play. It has been celebrated annually since 2024 and was established by the United Nations to champion a child’s fundamental right to play.

As one of the world’s largest toy manufacturers, the LEGO Group has been at the forefront of the celebrations, with megastar Jason Momoa fronting its campaign.

In the United Kingdom, events have been taking place up and down the country, including at the heart of government.

10 Downing Street, the central hub of the British government, welcomed students from Sacred Heart Primary School in Islington to build with LEGO bricks and discuss the importance of play.

This initiative is part of the ‘Lessons at 10’ scheme, an outreach programme that brings schoolchildren into Number 10 for a unique and memorable experience.

The overall aim of both initiatives is to ensure children continue to play and engage their brains in creative and meaningful ways.

Celebrities have also been visiting cities across the UK to speak with children and adults about their playing habits.

Made in Chelsea star and 2023 I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! winner Sam Thompson spoke to people in Battersea about LEGO

He discovered that some children believe adults do not play enough, and found that many young people want their parents to engage more in their hobbies.

In Scotland, The Traitors series 4 winner Stephen Libbey carried out a similar initiative, speaking to people on the streets of Glasgow about playing while building with LEGO bricks.

Many participants told The Scotsman that they had not played in a long time, but agreed on how enjoyable and engaging it can be.

Together, these campaigns reinforce the message that play is not just for children, but something adults should also embrace – not only to support children, but to benefit their own wellbeing too.
